Dr. Akit Patel is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology with additional expertise in Endoscopic Ultrasound, ERCP, and pancreaticobiliary disease.
Dr. Patel received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. He earned his Doctorate in Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. He completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX where he was also Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine before moving on to a specialization in gastroenterology. He then completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, TX, as well as an additional fellowship in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy. He has specialized training in Advanced Endoscopy techniques including Endoscopic Ultrasound, ERCP, tumor ablation, endoscopic mucosal resection, and endoscopic suturing.
Dr. Patel has co-authored several publications and is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Physicians, and American Medical Association.
Dr. Patel is married and enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and watching movies.

Dr. Shanil Harkins is Board Certified in Gastroenterology and has a special interest in both Esophageal Disorders and Pancreatic Biliary Disease. She has been practicing since 2014 and is fluent in Spanish and English.
Dr. Harkins received her Bachelors in Science at the University of Puerto Rico as Magna Cum Laude. She earned her Doctorate of Medicine with Clinical Honors from the Ponce School of Medicine. Dr. Harkins completed both her Internal Medicine residency and her Gastroenterology and Advanced Endoscopy Fellowships at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL. She has special training in Advanced Endoscopy techniques as well as ERCP, Tumor Ablation and High-Resolution Manometry.
Dr. Harkins has participated in a number of Academic Research Studies. She has also earned honors and awards to include Elected Member of the USF Gastroenterology Clinical Competency Committee, USF Internal Medicine “Resident of the Month”, and Former Miss Guayama, Puerto Rico.
